Mathematics: A Beautiful Evolution

Most of the mathematical concepts we encounter every day - numbers, addition, subtraction - seem so basic, so hard to avoid in discussing reality on even the most basic level, that it's hard to imagine someone having to sit down and invent them. Who was the first person to look at two rocks and think, "Two more and I've got four?" The very idea almost seems absurd.

But mathematics is, in part, a language - not just a set of logical relationships and entailments that seems deeper than words, but a set of notations that allow us to discover those relationships. You can't see that twice two makes four, until you have a symbol for "two" that your brain can operate with. And those symbols - that language - did have to develop, strange as it may seem. (Prehistoric artifacts seem to indicate that the earliest humans had only four "numbers" at their disposal "none," "one," "two," and "many" - showing just how much our ability to talk about numbers depends on having the right words for them.)

We don't know which culture was the first to develop a number system more elaborate than "one, two, lots!" A 20,000-year-old bone found near the Nile River seems to show a sequence of prime numbers - which would indicate fairly sophisticated mathematical knowledge from fairly early on. Then there was the Harappan civilization of the Indus Valley in present-day North India and Pakistan. As far as we know, these folks were the first to use decimals, among many other important concepts.

Archaeology also seems to find evidence of a sophisticated number system during the Shang Dynasty in China, 1600 years before Christ. Archaeologists often turn up new discoveries bearing on the history of human consciousness - so it's hard to say who was the first to develop this or that idea with any certainty.

But many mathematical ideas - like many other things - begin with the Sumerians. This culture - considered by some historians the cradle of civilization - flourished near present-day southern Iraq between three and five thousand years ago, and besides contributing the world's first known work of literature (the still-impressive tale of Gilgamesh), they developed a numerical system based on sixes. If you've ever wondered why an hour has sixty minutes, or a minute sixty seconds - after all, it'd be much simpler if everything went by 100 (so that our basic unit of time was made of 100 smaller units, rather than sixty seconds, sixty minutes)- it's in part because of lingering Sumerian influence. As Sumer's culture declined, it was absorbed into the Babylonian Empire, which also seems to have produced mathematical thought, if the handful of Babylonian mathematical writings still remaining to us provides any indication.

Babylonians, Egyptians and ancient Indians all seem to have shared at least one important discovery - the so-called Pythagorean theorem, a rule having to do with how to figure the length of the sides of certain kinds of triangles. (Clearly, this discovery was of use to the culture that built the Pyramids.) The fact that this theorem was common to all three major ancient cultures suggests the degree of traffic they may have had with each other, despite some historians' suggestion that each culture was mainly closed-off to other places. And the fact that we know the theorem as the Pythagorean theorem - after the much-later Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras - illustrates the well-known, and often-criticized, tendency of some historians to want to give the ancient Greeks credit for everything.

Not that the Greeks don't deserve plenty. Greek mathematics grew up alongside Greek philosophy and Greek science - indeed, the three disciplines weren't really separated; for the ancient Greeks, all the disciplines of knowledge were one thing. Thales, for example - whom you'll often find cited as the first Western philosopher - used geometry to calculate the height of the pyramids, among other things. In any case, Greek thinkers took the young art of math to a new level of sophistication. Euclid wrote a geometry textbook so percipient as to remain useful today, Aristotle defined laws of logic, and Archimedes remains near the top of some math historians - all-time greats list. The tight relationship between math and philosophy in ancient Greek is well-expressed by the inscription found on the door of Plato's Academy: "Let nobody ignorant of geometry enter here."

As the amount of time that children spend watching television increases, so does the concern for how it affects their academic ability. Children are watching on average four hours of television a day, and extensive research is being made into the effects. However, there is currently no evidence suggesting that television watching affects children`s performance in school in a negative manner. In fact, modern research has found that there is a positive correlation between television viewing of 10 hours per week and sustained academic results.

Television can be a very useful academic tool, and has been used in the classroom for academic purposes since the 1970`s. The television programmes are used to assist children in various subject areas, and are used alongside other teaching materials, to give a well rounded approach to learning materials. This has proved successful as children prefer learning visually at a young age. In the past, few programmes were designed for this purpose. Research into the effects of television on children`s behaviour and performance has been in place since the 1950`s. However, with the formation of the Action for Children`s Television society in 1970, the research has been extensive and covering a variety of areas. The importance of the content of children`s television has created governing bodies on each television network to make sure they are fulfilling their public responsibility. The research is weighted against product demand, current issues and education, and aims to make sure that all characters are good role models. This includes removing stereotyping and encouraging social tolerance.

As a result, regular television now consistently shows programmes of an educational nature. These programmes can easily be found on channels such as national geographic, discovery, and the learning channel, as well as on general stations worldwide. It was the well known children`s television programme Sesame Street that was first broadcast in 1969 that changed the face of educational TV for children. It showed that children do not only learn through informative documentary style programmes but that they learn skills by modelling positive behaviours on television.

Research has found that repetition is central to a child`s education, and this applies to educational television viewing also. It states that reruns are useful as they create recognisable characters and situations which help children to learn about cause and effect, sequencing and also improve their understanding of people and the world around them. Children`s television programmes are repeated up to four times a year to maximise the potential, though of course, this also assists with costs.

Another useful feature of television is that it tackles difficult questions in the areas of morality and ethics. Through the medium of television, children are exposed to ideas and made aware of cultures that they can not necessarily experience for themselves. Television also assists with topics that are tricky to approach such as bereavement and bullying. As the subject is raised outside of the child`s environment, then it can be easier for them to discuss and deliberate over these subjects, particularly if they are relevant to their own experiences. Television is a popular medium of choice for conveying such ideas in classrooms around the world.

A final point to consider is that television is a visually stimulating medium and is of interest to children. Therefore, it can be used to assist reluctant learners by creating interest and removing pressure that can accompany traditional learning techniques. Television is a useful educational tool if used correctly and in moderation. Television can assist with academic learning and also their social and emotional development. Although more research is needed, it is the attitude towards television and its uses that creates a successful environment in which children can learn.

Perfume is one of those products that may influence our emotions. People`s sense of smell influences behavior and sets different moods. It may even bring up memories of the past. As a marketing tool, perfume is also present in our everyday lives and it can be found in lots of consumer products. Besides the fact that perfume is so popular, have you ever wandered how it came into being what it is today? What`s the history of perfume?

Some anthropologists say that perfume was used by primitive man thru the burning of gums and resins for incense. Eventually from 7000 to 4000 bc, richly scented plants, animal and fatty oils of olive and sesame are thought to have been combined with fragrant plants to create original ointments.

Three thousand years ago in ancient Egypt, historians believe that perfume was first used in rituals, as part of their religious ceremonies, creating a pleasant smell. These scents came from gums, resin trees, oil and from a variety of plants resulting in a perfume unguent that was rubbed into the skin. Hundreds of years later, women of Egypt were using perfume for their cosmetic qualities. It is believed that Egytptian queen Cleopatra had her own exclusive balms and scents used as cosmetics and aphrodisiac, which helped her to conquer Julius Caesar and later Mark Anthony. Also from this same era, it is believed that perfume was used in Mesopotamia for ritual ceremonies. And farther east, in China, aromatic herbs were used for medicine purposes.

Later on as trade routes expanded, perfume became very popular and demand for scent products increased trade among different civilizations. Africa and India started to supply Middle Eastern civilization with spikenard and ginger. Syrians sold fragrant goods to Arabia. Mediterranean civilization began buying cymbopogon and ginger from South Arabia. And so the trade of scent goods kept on, and as it continued to swell, fragrance perfume was eventually introduced thru time to several civilizations such as Hindus, Israelites, Carthaginians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans and finally reintroduced hundreds of years later in Italy and France.

By the 13th century Italy was doing major trades of spices and perfumes with Eastern civilizations. Portugal and Spain were also trying to establish important trades of spices by having exclusive routes to the East. That`s how the new world of America got to be discovered.

As Italian perfume influence swept over neighboring countries, France began expanding the use of perfume by first offering perfumed gloves, which were most often perfumed with neroli or animal scents such as ambergris and civet. From then on, French perfume has become famous worldwide and today sets the standard for excellence.

Also France played a major role in reestablishing the use of perfume for therapeutic purposes in the western world. It has been reported that during Word War II, therapeutic perfume had been used in the treatment of wounds and burns, and later in the treatment of psychiatric problems.

Perfume has brought different people together in the past thru the trade of aromatic scents. It also played a major deal, since its trade meant economical power for the nations. And so the history of modern man has been greatly influenced by this special product, enabling new worlds to be discovered. On a personal level, perfume is capable of influencing people`s behavior and that by itself sets perfume in class by itself. Perhaps that`s what makes it so desirable by all of us.

Remember that the games on the computer are helping them learn, and that just because it is a game doesn't mean that it is a waste of time.

A Closer Look At The Alternative Energy Sources Of Solar And Wind Power

More and more scientists today agree that global warming is a serious issue and that the cause of global warming is carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned. Politicians, too, are being swayed as they see increases in property damaged, injuries, and even deaths due to natural catastrophes which appear to have gotten worse in recent decades.

Because fossil fuels appear to be the source of worldwide atmospheric change, people have began to look to other methods of producing energy. In addition to causing atmospheric change, there's the reality that we will run out of fossil fuels. The world's economy is based on fossil fuels but they are a finite resource. Eventually we will run out of them. Fossil fuels are not a sustainable resource. Two methods of producing energy which have little impact on the environment and are sustainable are solar and wind power.

First, we'll take a look at solar power. Solar power is, of course, power derived from the energy of the sun's rays. The limitation with this energy source is the sun itself. The sun will never run out, except at night. Solar power sources have been designed to compensate for the downtime of night or cloudy days, but solar power works best in sunny climates.

Solar power is generally used in one of three ways: to generate heat, to generate electricity, and to desalinate salt water. Solar powered heating systems are usually either active or passive in design. An active solar heating system uses pumps to circulate water which has been heated by the sun. Passive solar heating systems use the nature of water to create circulation. This method relies on the fact that heat energy wants to move into areas of lesser heat.

In generating electricity, solar power is harnessed by photovoltaic cells which convert the suns energy into electricity. These cells have been widely used to power calculators for decades. In solar desalination, the power of the sun is used to evaporate water to separate it from the salt and other undesirable minerals.

Another type of clean, renewable power comes from the wind. Wind power, while growing in popularity, still accounts for barely 1% of the world's power supply. This is hard to believe considering how much the wind blows! Wind power is usually harnessed using wind turbines.

A centuries old version of harnessing wind power is the windmill. These lovely structures used the wind to grind grains and pump water. Today's wind turbines are advanced machinery employing the latest technologies.

More and more "wind farms" are sprouting up around the world. These huge arrays of wind turbines can be found on land and offshore. The biggest ones in the US are land-based farms in California, Oregon, and Washington. There are also more and more popping up the Midwest. Because of energy costs and damage done to the environment, alternative energy sources are receiving a great deal of interest. Two of the most promising are solar and wind power.
